They Say That Our Greatest Strengths Can Also Be Our Greatest Weaknesses

I do friendships
too well. I connect
easily and quickly.
I love interaction,
community and
conversation. I
love knowing
people and being
known. This proclivity
is troublesome,
however, when I
allow my taste
for familiarity
to crowd out
my connection
with the One
who knows me
better than anyone
else could.

I never set out to
do such a thing.
I meet a new
friend and jump
in with both feet.
Before I know it,
I'm in up to
my neck and I
require another friend
on the bank to
get my attention
with a lifesaver.
Sometimes, that
comrade may shout
out warnings to
stay alert and
watch for rising
water. There are
times in which
I hear, and intend
to be cautious, but
nevertheless find
myself swept up in the
current of contention.

I am weary.
I am irritated
that this is my
struggle. Balance
does not come easily
for me -- full immersion
does. I ask for direction
from the Captain;
help to know the art of
balance on the water --
knowing that there is
much pleasure in a
properly balanced expedition.
